The Best Time to Trek in the Annapurna Region

Timing your Himalayan trek correctly is arguably more important than any piece of gear you pack. Weather determines visibility, trail conditions, crowd levels, and your overall experience. Here is how each season plays out in the Annapurna region.

Spring (March – May): The Premier Season

Spring is widely considered the best time to trek in Annapurna. Daytime temperatures are mild, rhododendron forests explode with colour, and the mountain views are clear before the summer haze sets in. Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill are spectacular in late March to early April. Expect busy trails on the most popular routes.

Monsoon (June – August): Off-Season Charm

The summer monsoon brings heavy rainfall and leeches on lower trails, but also transforms the landscape into lush green valleys. Serious trekkers willing to brave the conditions are rewarded with empty teahouses, half-price accommodation, and an atmosphere unlike any other season. The Upper Mustang rain shadow area remains dry — an excellent alternative.

Autumn (September – November): Classic Season

October is the single best month in the Himalayan trekking calendar. The air is crystal clear after the monsoon, temperatures are comfortable, and the mountain views are at their absolute sharpest. Expect full teahouses and busier trails — book accommodation a day or two in advance on the ABC route.

Winter (December – February): Quiet and Cold

High passes like Thorong La on the Annapurna Circuit may be closed by snow in January and February. But lower-altitude routes like Poon Hill and Ghorepani remain open and nearly empty. If you are comfortable with cold mornings and clear blue-sky days, winter offers a uniquely peaceful trekking experience.
